Math word problem

Mind Warrior - 26 Jun 2009 01:29 GMT I'd like to know the proper way to set up the equation for this math word problem:
"How many minutes is it before 12 noon if nine minutes ago it was twice as many minutes past 10 am?"
Now I figured out the answer of 34 by sampling various numbers for the BN (before noon) value and then adding 9, then doubling it to see if I get the same time. But I'd like to know how to set up which should be a very simple equation so that I may easily solve problems of this nature when they are more complex.
Thank you for any assistance!

You've misunderstood the question. If it's now 34 minutes before noon, then nine minutes ago it was 43 minutes before noon and therefore 77 minutes after 10 a.m., but 77 is not twice 34. The correct answer is 37 minutes before noon, so that nine minutes ago it was 46 minutes before noon and 74 minutes after 10 a.m.: 74 = 2 * 37.
> But I'd like to know how to set up which should be a very > simple equation so that I may easily solve problems of > this nature when they are more complex. Let x be the present number of minutes before noon; nine minutes ago it was x + 9 minutes before noon and 2x minutes past 10 a.m. There are altogether 120 minutes between 10 a.m. and noon, so (x + 9) + 2x = 120. Simplify: 3x + 9 = 120, 3x - 111, x = 37.

You didn't cross-post: you multi-posted. Cross-posting is generally preferred, for the reasons given at <http://oakroadsystems.com/genl/unice.htm#xpost> and <http://web.archive.org/web/20070626185213/http://smjg.port5.com/faqs/usenet/xpos t.html>, among many other places.

The point is that you can post to more than one different usenet group with a single posting by listing tose newsgroups, separated by commas, in the "Newsgroup:" heading, just above the "Subject:".
The process is called cross-posting and is quite common and accepted.
To post the same content several times but to a different but single newsgroup each time is called multi-posting, and is, at best, a singularly inefficient process.

No, the REAL POINT, and what you need to get into your pinhead, is.....I DON'T CARE!! I will multipost, crosspost, crossdress while posting, and wear a cross while posting to as many groups, and as frequently as I care to.
You people are making a lot of wasted spam postings here needlessly. It was an innocent matter of me posting in three math forums. The next time I'll look for 20 forums to post in. I'm sure you'll need to up the dosage of your medication when I do.
Obviously you idiots have nothing better to do. A bunch of unemployed math geeks with no social life and no career prospects.

You are quite free to tread your own primrose path, but we are equally free to point out (1) that you are doing so, and (2) that there are shortcuts that you are not taking advantage of.

Virgil, if your IQ was greater than your waist size, you would have realized that this has nothing at all to do with taking advantage of shortcuts. I'll recap the chronology for you, taking care to use small and simple words for you benefit.
1) I posted a math question (and also on 2.....yes, only 2, other math related forums as well) 2) A busybody idiot named kurtz makes a useless spam post whining about the fact that this question was posted in 2 other math groups (3 in total). 3) I reply to the busybody idiot named kurtz indicating that he/she/it was out of line and that I will cross post (yes cross post, not multipost) as often as I want. 4) A simpleton named scott misunderstands everything (as low IQ cretins tend to do) and mangles this into (and mistakenly so) an issue about cross posting vs multiposting, when even a 6 year old should be able to realize that cross posting is cross posting regardless of whether or not it's done the easiest way (by putting multiple group names in the usegroups field, or doing it manually as I did because I wasn't aware of the other groups at the time I made my original post. 5) A probable fetal-alcohol effects case imbecile named virgil, who apparently has trouble reading and comprehending simple English, mistakenly thinks this is an argument about the most efficient way to cross post when it's really just about someone putting a busybody whiner (kurtz) in their place for wasting bandwidth about cross posting. kurtz was NOT whining about the fact that I didn't cross post in the most efficient way, you mindless eunuch, he/she/it was whining about the fact that this same post appeared in 2 other forums. If you had the reading comprehension skills of an elementary school student or better, it would have been OBVIOUS to you. Additionally, the idiot named kurtz also made pointless whining posts in those other 2 forums as well, which prompted me to make my initial reply here.

I didn't say that it wasn't, or that you shouldn't: I merely drew your attention to the distinction between cross-posting, which within reasonable limits is considered perfectly acceptable, and multi-posting, which is not. If, as seems likely, you didn't understand the distinction, you should have resorted to one of the links that I supplied.

Read over the following words very SLOWLY until this concept penetrates that thick skull and into your tiny brain......
I DO NOT CARE!!!!!
I will multipost, crosspost, crossdress while posting, and wear a cross while posting to as many groups, and as frequently as I care to.
Get your daddy to explain to you what a girl looks like and try talking to one for once in your pathetic little existence!!

You apparently haven't even realized that I don't particularly object to your multi-posting; I merely pointed out why many others do. This information, like my response to your original question, was intended to be helpful. In view of your charming responses, I shall endeavor henceforth to provide no information that might prove helpful.

I DIDN'T MULTIPOST ANYTHING. I CROSS POSTED. Cross posting means posting the same post to more than one group. That is what I did. You're also too incredibly STUPID to realize that this issue isn't even about cross posting vs multi posting. This is about a busybody whining about the fact that this same post was posted to two other groups. You're not even capable of following the logic of the discussion!

Brian gave you some of the many references to crossposting, but you've already told us you don't care to be educated or to follow accepted conventions.
Good luck getting help from people you've been insulting.

No, Stan, I'm not pissing off the same people I was asking for help. I wasn't asking a worthless idiot who feels the need to whine about crossposting (ala kurtz) or a mindless american lackey who feels the need to stick their nose into a thread that they have no ability to make a purposeful contribution to, as you have done, for any help.

Aggie1956 - 01 Jul 2009 02:52 GMT Consider this:
N= Noon T = minutes before
N - T - 9 = (N -120) + 2(T+9)
N - T - 9 = N - 120 + 2T + 18
-T - 2T = -120 + 27 -3T = -93 T = 31
12:00 - 31 = 11:29 AM 11:29 - 9 = 11:20 AM
10:00AM + 2( 31+ 9) = 11:20AM
