Well, "new" is a relative concept. OR (and MP in particular) are
applied to a variety of problems in health care, ranging from policy
decisions (there were articles about needle distribution in Management
Science back in the '80s or '90s) to more "tactical" issues (such as
pattern recognition/classification in radiology). At this year's
INFORMS meeting, there was a presentation on the use of a math
programming model to optimize decisions relating to the scanning of a
subject (can't remember if this was CAT, MRI or what). So some of the
health care apps are old, but some are relatively new.
A few years ago I was engaged in a discussion with a then-Ph. D.
candidate who was using MP models to study ways to configure organic
molecules or compounds. (At least I think that was the underlying issue
-- I never got the full details of the application.) I believe her
specific problem was related to diabetes, but I won't swear to that.

You're welcome. :-)

I'll check out the studies done in the informs journals. Thanks for
the heads up!

You're welcome. Incidentally, the radiological application I mentioned
was the Edelman award winner. The presentation was by Eva K. Lee of
Georgia Tech. You can see the abstract at
https://informs.emeetingsonline.com/emeetings/formbuilder/clustersessiondtl.asp?
csnno=7747&mmnno=167&ppnno=28708.
I went to the presentation and found it quite interesting.

Thanks again. The research seemed very interesting, and was very
useful.
