Experiments with JSH's Diophantine chains29 Sep 2008 08:28 GMT29
As I suspected yesterday, JSH's chain of Diophantine equations approach
blows up fast in most cases.  I've modified my little test program to
use a big integer library, so it can go farther, and here's an overview
of the results.
Creation of man from "Nutfah"28 Sep 2008 22:12 GMT4
Creation of man from "Nutfah"
"Be cursed (the disbelieving) man!  How ungrateful he is! From what
thing did He create him?  From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He
created him and then set him in due proportion."
JSH: Diophantine chains and x^2 - 2y^2 = 128 Sep 2008 17:53 GMT9
Given the general result that whenever you have
x^2 + Dy^2 = F
you have a connected equation
z^2 + D(x+y)^2 = F*(D+1)

Hi there, after staring at this for a while now, I don't understand this bond example:
Example: Let us suppose that BT were to issue a bond with 10 years to maturity. The BT bond has an annual coupon of £80. Therefore, BT will pay £80 per year for the next

Linear Algebra Question - Linearly Independent26 Sep 2008 01:30 GMT6
I'm new to Linear Algebra, and have a question about a problem having to do with linear independence / dependence.
If vectors (v1, v2, v3) are linearly independent, wouldn't a combination of these vectors also be independent?
For instance, if there are vectors (a1, a2, a3) that ...

Proofs, Let x be from set S25 Sep 2008 05:04 GMT10
In some proofs we pick out an arbitrary element from some set.
Usually this is one of the first lines in the proof.
e.g., "Suppose a /in A."  (*)
When we do this, must we always be sure that A is nonempty or do the

JSH: Changing rules, mid-stream22 Sep 2008 18:08 GMT2
The US Government changed the rules and politicos are in the process
of demonizing short sellers, and I know how it feels to be someone who

changed on you.
