Is there any syntax for converting a date to a numeric variable???

After a few days of working with SPSS 16 I've had the following problems:
- I use SPSS 16.0.1 (international English version) on a desktop PC and on a
notebook computer, both running under Windows XP Prof. (German version) with

I'm having difficulty with this string problem.  I have a string
variable which contains 0, 1, 2 or 3 numerical codes (1 or 2 digits)
separated by commas. Here's a set of possible values:
data list free / id (f2.0) c(a8).

I just upgraded to 16 and Textpad no longer works. The fix from SPSS,
below didn't work. Anyone else have this problem and know a fix?
